Position Description

As a Principal Technical Designer, you will be responsible for creating and implementing complex, technical, and systemic design elements in a game.

You will be, at your core, a game or level designer recognized for your technical skills, working within a design or multidisciplinary production team.

Acting as the technical reference for your team, you will assist, support, and advise your peers as needed. You may also be called upon to become the project’s technical expert on a specific game element.

What You Will Do

  • Be responsible for the creation and implementation of the technical elements of a complete game feature, collaborating closely with technical directors, programmers, and other disciplines.
  • Act as a technical expert on a specific topic, and in this role, be responsible for tools, documentation, technical support, and the identification and sharing of best practices.
  • Participate in the optimization and validation of data, ensuring your colleagues adhere to technical standards for your area of expertise while considering budget constraints.
  • Engage in advanced data debugging through to the end of production.
  • Provide periodic feedback to design management, such as tool and method improvement suggestions.
  • Participate in testing new features or tools before they are rolled out to the rest of the team.
  • Perform production tasks within a game or level design team, including prototyping gameplay features during game design.
  • Design and implement more complex, abstract design elements in the game that present technical challenges or have implications across the entire game.

Qualifications

What You Bring to the Team

  • 8 years of experience in game or level design with a strong technical profile
  • Ability to understand and communicate in technical language, with clear written and verbal expression of ideas
  • Strong adaptability, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • User-focused mindset
  • Great curiosity and a passion for understanding how things work
  • Experience with different game engines and platforms (an asset)
  • Experience with various 2D/3D creation software (an asset)
  • Experience in programming/scripting (an asset)
