We are looking for an Engineering Manager to join us in Berlin or remotely. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will support a team of engineers working on our AI Search Experience.

The AI Search Experience team works on building high-quality AI-powered search experiences. The team focuses on grounding LLM responses in trusted data (e.g. point of interest, knowledge bases, travel) and the open web, tailoring responses to specific user intents and use cases (e.g. studying for their exam, discovering a travel destination), and continuously improving quality, reliability, and transparency. The team collaborates closely with sister teams across our conversational search product and with our Platform team to ship cohesive AI features, loved by our users. The team directly contributes to Ecosia’s mission to provide a modern, sovereign European-search experience.

In addition, the AI Search Experience team owns and evolves a new internal frontend stack based on modern open-source libraries. This stack is used by multiple teams across the company as their frontend foundation, and the team is responsible for maintaining, improving, and enabling others to build on top of it effectively.

As their Engineering Manager, you will combine effective technical leadership with people management. In collaboration with your Product and Engineering peers, you will enrich our equitable, inclusive, curious, and outcome-oriented Engineering culture.

What you’ll be doing

  • Partner closely with your Product and Design counterparts to shape the AI Search Experience strategy and translate ambiguous problem spaces into clear technical direction.

  • Support the team in building and improving AI-powered search features, including:

  • Grounding LLM responses in structured data and the web

  • Improving response quality, relevance, and trustworthiness

  • Tailoring outputs to specific user intents and use cases

  • Guide architectural decisions around LLM integration, retrieval systems, evaluation pipelines, and experimentation.

  • Ensure operational excellence, reliability, observability, and scalability of AI systems in production.

  • Oversee the development and maintenance of our internal frontend framework stack, ensuring it remains robust, well-documented, and easy to adopt by other teams.

  • Collaborate with other Search teams to enable seamless cross-team initiatives and shared technical standards.

  • Enable your team to thrive by removing roadblocks, facilitating decisions, resolving conflicts, and continuously improving processes.

  • Hold regular 1:1s, feedback, and growth conversations to support career development through coaching and mentoring.

  • Review team performance and ensure fair, equitable evaluation and compensation.

  • Promote a culture of continuous learning, especially around AI engineering best practices, experimentation, and responsible AI development.

  • Co-create a collaborative and inclusive culture in line with our company values.

What you bring

  • Enjoy developing and growing people and have a documented history of leading, managing, coaching, and mentoring engineers with different profiles and backgrounds.

  • At least 5+ years of experience designing and shipping software to production, including guiding initiatives end-to-end (from problem framing to monitoring systems in production).

  • Solid technical depth, with experience in AI/ML engineering, LLM-based systems, search, information retrieval, or data-intensive systems.

  • Proficiency navigating a modern web stack, cloud environments, and infrastructure-as-code.

  • A solid sense of ownership, pragmatism, and bias toward action.

  • A clear commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and to building psychologically safe teams.

Process:

  • Talent Partner call (⏱️ 45')

  • Leadership Interview (⏱️ 60')

  • Technical conversation (⏱️ 1h15')

  • Product call (⏱️ 60')
